On the Cover: BUCKY PIZZARELLI

By Elliott Simon; photos by Alan Nahigian

Close to 65 years ago a 17-year-old guitarist named John "Bucky" Pizzarelli was tapped by big band leader Vaughn Monroe to sit in for a weekend. As a result, the jazz world gained what was to become one of its most significant practitioners, one who continues to perform and share his wisdom with a modesty that belies his stature. Pizzarelli is at Bargemusic Jul. 3rd with Howard Alden, Bella Luna Jul. 8th with Jack Wilkins and Rose Hall Jul. 30th as part of The Spirit of Django and Grappelli.

Interview: JUNIOR MANCE

By Ken Dryden; photo by Kabilio

Chicago native Junior Mance doesn't sound like a man approaching his 80th birthday. The pianist, who credits Gene Ammons, Cannonball Adderley and Dizzy Gillespie with helping him grow as a musician, has led over 30 recordings of his own and made numerous appearances as a sideman during a lengthy career. Mance is at World Financial Center Plaza Jul. 17th-18th, Bryant Park Jul. 21st-25th and Cafe Loup Sundays.

Artist Feature: OLUYEMI THOMAS

By Martin Longley; photo by Peter Gannushkin

Following the specific faith of Baha'i, rather than any nebulous notion of general spirituality, Oluyemi Thomas views music as an active expression of human nature, rejecting definitions and separations between so-called composition and improvisation, time and free-form, in and out, Motown and AACM.

Record Label Spotlight: TELARC

By Tom Greenland

Telarc's central mission is to create outstanding recorded performances using the highest fidelity on its naturalistic recordings; its prominent calling card is acoustical perfectionism, manifested through craftsmanship and progressive technology. Artists performing this month include Monty Alexander at Birdland Jul. 30th-31st; Geri Allen and Cyrus Chestnut at Minton's Jul. 4th; Randy Brecker at Blue Note Jul. 30th-31st; Freddy Cole at 92nd Street Y Jul. 30th; Tony DeSare at Dizzy's Club Jul. 21st; Jon Hendricks at Jazz Standard Jul. 3rd-6th; Hiromi at Blue Note Jul. 22nd-27th and John Pizzarelli at Smalls Jul. 29th.

Club Profile: DOUGLASS STREET MUSIC COLLECTIVE

By Matthew Miller

There are a few things that differentiate the nondescript brick building that houses Douglass Street Music Collective from its industrial neighbors in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. Freshly planted flowers by the door, a two-tone sign reading Gowanus Arts and, a few times a week, a crowd spilling onto the otherwise abandoned street or improvised music emanating from the open door. Performers this month include Rob Garcia Quartet, Trio This, John Sinton's 2x2 and Tanya Kalmanovitch, Douglas Yates, Frank Carlberg and Ken Filiano.

Encore: ANTHONY DAVIS

By Wilbur MacKenzie

This month brings to the city two performances by pianist and composer Anthony Davis, who has been living in Southern California for the last decade. Prior to his immigration to the West Coast, Davis was active in New York and his return brings an improvisational voice sorely missed in the city where he made his home for so many years. Davis is at The Stone Jul. 14th solo and with his Episteme project.

Lest We Forget: JOE FARRELL

By Donald Elfman

Joe Farrell was an extraordinary saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist whose short career encompassed roles in some major jazz groups.

Megaphone: All I Really Need to Know I Learned from Jazz Musicians

By Jessica Jones

The sound of the music has a message and it's not a message that is in the language of words. Words can only dance around the edges of it. Jones is at Bowery Poetry Club Jul. 12th.
